 |
By Wellington C. Ramos
NEW YORK, USA: On Sunday, August 31, 2008, hundreds of Belizeans gathered at Gershwin Park in Brooklyn, New York City, to socialize and witness a football marathon that was arranged and organized by Roo, Mugga Garbutt, Wallace Mitchell (Wallydee) Guy Bishop, Reginald Jex Treasurer and Arthur Gayle President of the Honduran Football League.
This marathon is held annually at this park every year on Labor Day weekend. This event is a part of the annual Labor Day Carnival Parade that is held at Eastern Parkway with all the Caribbean countries. The teams that were scheduled to play were; Juca Vs Victory, Belize Brooklyn Strikers Vs Belize Harlem Strikers and Wallydee Strikers Vs Guy Bishop Strikers.
The results of the games are as follows: Victory-6 and Juca-1, Belize Brooklyn Strikers-5 and Belize Harlem Strikers-4 and Wallydee Strikers-1 and Guy Bishop Strikers-1. The two exciting matches were between the Belize Brooklyn Strikers Vs. Belize Harlem Strikers and Wallydee Strikers Vs. Guy Bishop Strikers. Last year Guy Bishop Strikers defeated Wallydee Strikers and it gave the Guy Bishop Strikers bragging rights for the whole year. This year the Wallydee Strikers struck back for revenge and defeated the Guy Bishop Strikers in a Penalty Shootout. The Wallydeee Strikers are now the Belizean Champions for the year 2008-2009 season until next year Labor Day Marathon.
Old players like Archibald, Victor Roches, Charlie Roches, Nolbert Moss, Frankie, Butler, Keith Nasario, Twist, Miller, Dale, Rupert, Austin Flores (World), Garcia, George Eagan, Milton Moreira, Buck, Junior Betson and Wellington Ramos all played in this event.
Every year Belizeans in New York, who are diehard football fans, look forward to this event to meet former football players and fans from Belize. This event would not have been possible without the support of Wallace Mitchell (Wallydee) and Guy Bishop who are the two most prominent Belizean Businessmen on Linden Street, the capital for Belizeans in Brooklyn New York City.
Martin Bermudez the President of Labuga.com a major Garifuna Website took pictures of this event, which are inserted in this article. This year, the Belizeans fielded a football team in the Honduran League but their performance was not satisfactory. A group of former Belizean players are planning to organize a new team for next year’s competition.
