Letter: Clarification on the Belize/Guatemala situation
LettersDear Sir:

Incidentally, I share the view that choosing a diplomatic solution over a military one is the best way forward for Belizeans. Yet, the notion which espouses that not going along with the compromis is tantamount to relegating the issue solely to a military solution, is a complete and utter fallacy.

Therein dwells the underlying, deceptive nature of this issue. The compromis is certainly a diplomatic effort; one that I believe holds too many inherent risks to Belize. Nonetheless, it is not the only diplomatic course that can be taken. That is why I call upon Belize’s civil society to become proactive in the process of educating the populace. Misinformation in any form, and at any level, is dangerous especially when it involves the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Belize.

In short, only a fool would advocate a military solution in dealing with the unfounded Guatemalan claim. The reality is plain for all to see. The route of the compromis and potentially going to the ICJ is a concoction of the OAS. It is not the sole diplomatic option at our disposal. In terms of other potential diplomatic alliances and potential avenues, let us not forget that Belize is a member of both CARICOM and SICA.

For Belizeans to blindly accept that the prescribed, OAS-driven compromis is our only diplomatic option, would be a mistake of gargantuan proportions. Again, I applaud the fact that Belizeans will have the opportunity to voice their opinion, via a simultaneous referendum. Let us pray and work diligently toward ensuring that our cumulative voice is steeped in a broad-based perspective which takes into account that the OAS sponsored route is not the “Omega” to this issue.

Civil society, let’s get the ball rolling and commence a genuine education process, which clearly and distinctly puts forth a non-partisan effort to inform Belizeans of all diplomatic options at our disposal.

Long live Belize in its, current, legal and geographic legitimacy.
